BISMARCK, N.D. – History will be made on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. inside the BSC Armory as a Mystics women's wrestling dual will take place for the very first time on campus.
The BSC women's wrestling team was introduced earlier this year and began their first season of existence this fall. They won their first-ever dual on Nov. 1 in Minneapolis against Division-III Augsburg (Minn.) and will take on Division-II Jamestown (N.D.) on Thursday.
Here are the probable starters for the Mystics (1-0), led by
Tyshawn White (1st season) and for the Jimmies (1-1), led by Tony DeAnda (7th season):
Different from men's collegiate wrestling, women's college wrestling is freestyle, the international Olympic style of wrestling. Freestyle emphasizes continuous action, high-amplitude throws, and scoring from neutral positions. Folkstyle, more common in the United States and the primary style for men's collegiate and high school wrestling, focuses more on positional control.
The key difference comes in the length of matches. Folkstyle (men's collegiate) matches are three periods totaling seven minutes (3-2-2), while freestyle matches are only two periods of three minutes each. The next big difference is in the scoring, outlined by assistant coach
David Young:
Individual Match Points
1 Match Point
- Step out – Opponent steps out of bounds
- Passivity – Opponent does NOT wrestle aggressively
- Reversal – Bottom wrestler gains advantage over opponent
- Cautions, Fleeing the Mat, Fleeing the Hold or Illegal Hold
Opposing coach's challenge fails
2 Match Points
- Takedown – From the standing (neutral) position take opponent to mat
- Back exposure – Cause opponent's back to face the mat
- Defensive wrestler holding Offensive wrestler in "danger" *
- Fleeing mat while in "danger" *
4 Match Points
