David Murphy is a strength and conditioning specialist with Sanford Sports and head strength and conditioning coach for Bismarck State College. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, a certified weightlifting coach through USA Weightlifting, and CPR/AED certified.
Beginning in his first year as BSC head strength coach, Murphy oversees all performance training for every athletic team. Before coming to BSC, he was head strength and conditioning coach for Dickinson State University from summer 2022 to summer 2025. At DSU, he worked with all athletic teams and oversaw the development of interns and graduate assistants in the strength and conditioning department.
Before becoming Dickinson State’s head strength and conditioning coach, Murphy was a paid intern at North Dakota State University for the 2019-20 academic year. He was later promoted to graduate assistant, responsible for training wrestling, track and field, men’s golf and softball. While at NDSU, he earned a master’s degree in health, nutrition and exercise science in spring 2022.
Murphy had previously completed multiple volunteer internships at NDSU and Sanford Sports, gaining hands-on coaching experience.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in human performance and fitness, with an emphasis on strength and conditioning, in fall 2018 from Northern State University. He also competed in NCAA Division II wrestling and track and field for five years at NSU. He was a three-time All-Conference selection in javelin, placing third as a freshman, first as a junior and second as a senior. He was also an Academic All-American for Wolves wrestling.
Murphy is from Fort Yates, North Dakota, on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. There, he competed in multiple sports and earned All-State honors in wrestling and javelin at Standing Rock High School.
