BISMARCK, N.D. – Bismarck State College sophomore guard Deonte Martinez led the Mystics in scoring for the fourth straight game, but he didn't get a lot of help down the stretch as Northwest College came from behind in the last minute to beat BSC 69-63 on Sunday at the Armory.
Martinez's 26-point effort wasn't enough to keep the Mystics from losing their fifth straight game and dropping to 4-9 overall. BSC did not score in the last 3:32 of the game. Its largest lead was 17 points with 3:47 to play in the first half.
Martinez was perfect offensively in the first half, helping the Mystics to a 39-30 lead. He made all three of his 3-pointers and was 8-for-8 overall for 19 points. As a team, BSC shot 59 percent from the field. Martinez started the second half with another three for his ninth straight make, but did not hit another shot. He finished 9-for-12 (4-for-6 on 3-pointers) and made all four of his free throw attempts.
But Martine was the only Mystic to reach double figures. Tobias Patton had nine points and Garrett Bader and Anthony Bertucci added eight. Toss out Martinez's shooting and BSC shot just 15-for-48 (31 percent).
The Trappers (13-7) took the lead for good on Will Hemme's only basket of the game, a 3-pointer with 1:00 left to play. Their last chance slipped away when Yannice Nlend rebounded his own missed front end and scored on a layup four a four-point lead with 21 seconds left. Davion McAdam scored 25 points to lead the Trappers.
The Mystics' remaining 14 games will all be against Mon-Dak Conference opponents beginning Thursday at home against Lake Region State College.
