BISMARCK, N.D. – Mon-Dak Conference scoring leader Sydney Gustavsson matched her season average in the first half and finished with 28 points to lead Bismarck State College to a 79-66 win over Northwest College Sunday at the Armory.
In their first game back after losing three straight games in Arizona during the holiday break, the Mystics (7-6) forged some breathing room right before halftime, survived a rally midway through the second half and won it going away.
Gustavsson entered the game averaging 19.4 points and half 19 by halftime to help BSC take a 45-29 lead into the break. She made 9 of 16 shots overall and 3 of 5 3-pointers. The sophomore guard also was 7-for-9 from the free throw line. She slso had five rebounds, to steals and two assists despite leaving for a time in the third quarter after taking a hard fall.
Ashton Kinnebrew bettered her season scoring average by five points with 21. She was 3-for-4 on 3-point attempts. Piper Harris added 11 points, seven rebounds and six steals and Haley Gereau led the Mystics in rebounding with 10. Northwest College (13-7) beat United Tribes 67-56 Saturday in Bismarck. Nayeli Acosta led the Trappers with 16 points. As a team, BSC shot 43 percent and 36 percent on 3-pointers and outrebounded the Trappers 38-33.
BSC led 49-37 when Gustavsson left the floor. Northwest College closed to within 58-52 by the end of the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Gustavsson and Katherine Fox scored on drives to the basket an BSC reestablished a larger lead.
