GLENDIVE, Mont. – Dawson Community College was down 21 in the first half but not out against Bismarck State College on Thursday, and the Buccaneers came all the way back to beat the Mystics 82-78 in a Mon-Dak Conference men's basketball game.
Joe Mpoyo scored six of his 27 points in the last 1:30 of the game as Dawson CC pulled away from a 75-75 tie. Mpoyo had four of his team's 14 3-pointers. Chris Davidson and Damon Gross Ventre added 14 points each.
Dawson fell way behind early in the game as BSC (8-12 Mon-Dak, 10-16 overall) got out to a 29-8 lead with 9:22 left in the first half. The Mystics' first 15 points came via 3-pointers. But they slowly allowed the Buccaneers (16-4 Mon-Dak, 22-7 overall) to close the gap and Dawson CC took a 72-71 lead with 4:25 to play. The game went back and forth until Mpoyo took control late.
Garrett Bader's fourth 3-pointer of the game made it 81-78 with seconds left. Bader and Jaden Hamilton had 17 points apiece for the Mystics, who conclude the regular season on Sunday at Lake Region State College. They open the Region XIII tournament March 1 against an opponent to be determined March 1 at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton.
