BISMARCK, N.D. – The fourth time was a charm, but not for the Bismarck State College women's basketball team. After losing three times to the Mystics during the season, Miles Community College figured things out on Wednesday, beating the Mystics 60-55 in the Region XIII tournament at the Armory.
The Pioneers (13-18) move on to Saturday's region final four at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton where they play Williston State College. MCC has won six of its last seven games, the only loss being a home setback to BSC.
The Mystics end the season with a 16-12 record. Of those wins, three had been at the expense of the Pioneers, who outscored BSC 10-5 in the last 2:33 of the game despite missing six straight free throws.
Shooting woes plagued the Mystics as they hit just 27% from the field and made only two of 21 3-point attempts (9.5%). They were slightly better from the line, making 13 of 25 free throws.
Ashton Kinnebrew scored 14 of her team-high 17 points in the first half, helping the Mystics to a 30-27 halftime lead. Katherine Fox turne in a stellar all-around game with 15 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Mon-Dak Conference scoring champion Sydney Gustavsson had 13 points, eight rebounds and five steals.
Jessica Tomkins had 17 points, Becky Melcher 16 and Angelina Dimasi 15 for the Pioneers. Dimasi's basket with 2:33 to play broke a 50-50 tie and Miles CC never trailed again.
