Mystics fall to Blue Hawks in four sets at home

Closely-battled match on Volley for the Way night sees DSU prevail.

BISMARCK, N.D. — Bismarck State put together one of its most competitive performances of the season but ultimately fell to Dickinson State, 3–1 (23-25, 21-25, 25-15, 24-26), Wednesday night at the BSC Armory. The near-capacity crowd, lathed in pink for Volley for the Way night, brought the energy for a tight match between the in-state rivals.

The Mystics (3-16, 1-13 Frontier) surged in the third set behind the hot hand of Reese Duchsherer, who notched a match-high 14 kills to go with seven digs and a service ace. Summer Thomas added 10 kills and three blocks, while Chelsa Krom tallied nine kills, two aces, and five blocks in a strong two-way effort. Ashley Martodam rounded out the offense with 10 kills and six blocks, giving BSC four players with double-digit points.

Setter Delaney Deschamp never came out of the game and dished out 39 assists and anchored the back row with 10 digs, while Piper Harris led the defense with 16 digs.

Despite a narrow edge in total attacks (155–148), the Mystics hit .135 to the Blue Hawks' .142 and came up just short in a tight fourth set that featured seven ties and four changes. Dickinson State was paced by Ashtynn Egan's 13 kills and Cate Floy's 10 kills, set up by Rylee Kogolshak who also had 39 assists and six kills of her own. The Blue Hawks imrpove to 10-9 overall and 6-8 in conference play.

The Mystics will look to rebound at they have two more home games in the upcoming weekend. On Friday, Oct. 17, they welcome the Montana Western Bulldogs (9-12, 7-7) to the Armory for an evening 6 p.m. matchup. The following day, they welcome the Orediggers of (RV) Montana Tech (12-8, 8-6) for Saturday afternoon 2 p.m. action.
