Mystics fall to Vikings in final fall game

Cole Shirley drives in the lone Mystic run in the 6-1 defeat.

Box Score

VALLEY CITY, N.D. — Bismarck State struck first behind an early RBI single from Cole Shirley, but Valley City State answered with six unanswered runs to down the Mystics 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Charlie Brown Field.

Game Summary

The Mystics (3-3) grabbed the lead in the opening frame when Pacey Phillips singled, stole second base, and scored on Shirley's sharp RBI single to center. That early spark proved short-lived, as Viking southpaw Connnor Martin (1-0) dominated from there, scattering four hits with nine strikeouts over seven innings and no walks. Reliever Takao Cookson tossed two hitless innings to close out the win and earn the save.

Valley City State (3-2) evened the score in the third inning on an RBI double by Connor Hoyt, then went ahead in the fourth when Jackson Penner singled home a run. The Vikings added two more in the fifth and tacked on a pair of unearned insurance runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Mystics at the Plate

Bismarck State's offense managed just four hits, all singles, from PhillipsShirley, and Alec Vincent. The Mystics were retired in order in five of the final six innings and struck out 10 times without drawing a walk against Martin and Cookson.

Shirley led the way at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with the lone RBI.

Pitching Breakdown

Starter Alex Panitzke (0-1) battled through 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while walking three and striking out two. Josh Bourbeau worked the next 1.2 frames, giving up two runs, and Eli Nyhammer was effective in relief, tossing the final three innings with no earned runs and seven ground-ball outs.

Vikings' Offensive Leaders

Hoyt powered the Valley City lineup, going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Kaden RozdebaNick Senn, and Alexis Velasco also contributed to a 10-hit team effort that capitalized on five walks and one BSC defensive miscue.
