Beavers defeat Mystics thanks to huge first quarter

Kennedy Stormer scores 21 in return to MSU Dome.

MINOT, N.D. – Bismarck State women's basketball traveled to face Division-II Minot State (N.D.) on Wednesday for the second half of their first back-to-back of the young season. The Beavers entered the contest, also coming off a game on Tuesday, a game in which they tallied their first win of the season against MSU-Billings.

The Mystics looked to disrupt Minot State's plan to start a winning streak, but the Beavers would not be denied as they came out with a purpose, scoring 33 points in the first 10 minutes to take a 33-19 lead.

It's a deficit that BSC wouldn't be able to come back from, as they couldn't find their rhythm from beyond the arc, shooting 5-for-35. They showed improved in the paint from their first two games of the season as they scored 24 points in the paint, more than doubling their previous highest total.

Minot State was laser-focused from distance, going 15-for-33 from deep, including 8-for-13 in their impressive first quarter. They finished with 34 points in the paint, and outrebounded the Mystics 54-to-37.

Kennedy Stormer (Harris), former Minot State guard from 2020-23, was the leading point scorer for the Mystics in her return to the MSU Dome with 21. She added five rebounds and, for the second day in a row, recorded five steals.

Ashley Martodam tallied 13 points on 6-of-11 from the field and added two assists. Alionna Lawrence, in just nine minutes of play, recorded seven points on 3-of-6 shooting.
With the loss, the Mystics fall to 0-3, and the Beavers improve to 2-5.

The Mystics return home following Wednesday's game for their home opener and first Frontier Conference games against No. 17 Rocky Mountain (Mont.) (2-0, 1-0) and No. 14 Carroll (Mont.) (1-2, 0-1). Those doubleheaders will start with the women's game at 5 p.m. followed by the men's game at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21-22.

Check out the women's schedule for information on how to follow and attend the upcoming home stand.
