MAYVILLE, N.D. – Bismarck State men's basketball came up short Monday afternoon, dropping an 85–59 decision to Mayville State (N.D.) at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
Mayville State set the tone early, opening the game with efficient shooting and defensive pressure to build a 44–24 lead by halftime. The Comets shot better than 54 percent from the field in the opening half, while Bismarck State struggled to find consistency offensively.
The Mystics showed improved energy coming out of the break, outscoring Mayville State 35–41 in the second half and shooting 40 percent from the field. BSC connected on five three-pointers after halftime and attacked the basket more effectively, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome as the Comets maintained control throughout the final 20 minutes.
Jah Gulley led Bismarck State with a team-high 19 points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers and going 5-of-6 at the free-throw line. Houston Davis followed with 18 points and five rebounds, while Tristin Davis added nine points. Carter Zeller chipped in eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
Bismarck State finished the afternoon shooting 34.4 percent from the field and 25 percent from beyond the arc, while Mayville State shot over 50 percent overall and placed five players in double figures.
The Mystics will fall to 1-17 and 1-11 in conference play, while the Comets improve to 7-13 and 3-10, tying them for eighth in the Frontier alongside Dickinson State.
BSC will look to rebound on Tuesday, Jan. 20, as they take on the Valley City State (N.D.) Vikings. VCSU (6-11) is currently 10th in the conference standings with a 2-10 record in conference play, most recently defeating Dickinson State, 96-92.
Tuesday's game is set for 6 p.m. at the Jamestown Civic Center. The game was relocated last week due to a mechanical issue at the Valley City State gymnasium.
