Rivalry rematch kicks off three-match homestand for Mystics

Volleyball hosts Dickinson State tonight, Montana Western on Friday and Montana Tech on Saturday at the Bavendick Center.

BISMARCK, N.D. -- Bismarck State volleyball enters a pivotal stretch of their home schedule, welcoming three Frontier Conference opponents to the Bavendick Center in a four-day span. The action kicks off tonight, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. against Dickinson State, followed by a Friday night matchup with Montana Western at 6 p.m., and wraps up Saturday afternoon with a 3 p.m. matchup against Montana Tech. Looking to rebound after recent setbacks, the Mystics (7-11 overall, 5-8 Frontier) have a prime opportunity to utilize their home-court advantage and climb the conference ranks.

How BSC Stacks Up

Through their recent stretch, the Mystics are hitting .163 as a team, averaging 11.8 kills, 10.7 assists, 1.5 aces, and 15.5 digs per set. Net defense remains a cornerstone of the Mystics' game plan, with the front line holding a strong 2.0 blocks per set average to consistently keep opposing hitters off-balance.

To orchestrate a successful week, setter Aislyn Hogan must establish an efficient, multi-dimensional offense. Balancing the attack will mean keeping middle blockers Jordyn Rood and Ellie Baumstarck involved early to hold central defenders and free up pin-hitters like powerhouse Reese Duchsherer. Defensively, the Mystics rely on libero Piper Harris to control the back row floor coverage and spark transition scoring opportunities.

Scouting the Opponents

Dickinson State Blue Hawks (Tonight, 7 p.m.)

The Blue Hawks (6-14, 5-8 Frontier) arrive in Bismarck deadlocked with the Mystics in the conference standings, making tonight's rivalry match a high-stakes tiebreaker. Dickinson State took the first meeting back on September 2, meaning the Mystics are hunting for redemption on their true home floor. Directed by setter Rylee Kogolshak, the Blue Hawks rely on offensive sparks from targets like Aubrey Allison and operational depth from Jane Ward. If the Mystics can shut down the perimeter and execute cleaner terminal swings than their .115 hitting baseline, they can protect home court and split the season series.

Montana Western Bulldogs (Friday, 6 p.m.)

The Bulldogs (10-11, 9-5 Frontier) head to North Dakota riding a wave of momentum and sitting near the top of the conference standings. Led by their stellar senior libero Madisyn Frazier, who recently claimed consecutive Frontier Conference Defender of the Week honors, Western presents a grueling defensive challenge. At the net, the Bulldogs counter with veteran size, featuring senior middle hitter Morgan Harrison and productive pins like Mia Duncan. BSC will need to embrace patience in prolonged rallies, utilizing tactical tooling at the net to bypass Western's elite floor defense.

Montana Tech Orediggers (Saturday, 3 p.m.)

The Orediggers arrive as one of the most potent offenses in the region, traditionally executing at an efficient clip near the top of national leaderboards in points and kills per set. Montana Tech previously claimed a four-set victory over Bismarck State in mid-September, utilizing a high-flying attack to stress the perimeter. To pull off the Saturday afternoon upset, the Mystics must string together disciplined block touches from Rood and Baumstarck, slowing down the Orediggers' quick-tempo transitions and forcing their primary hitters into defensive errors.
