Bismarck State College Mystics Athletics

MAYVILLE, N.D. -- Bismarck State volleyball suffered a stunning upset Friday, falling 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 25-20, 25-15) to a previously winless Mayville State squad at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.

The loss drops BSC to 7-9 overall and 5-6 in Frontier Conference play. Mayville State snapped a 15-match losing streak dating back to the start of the season, picking up its first win of 2026 and improving to 1-15 overall, 1-10 in conference play.

Set One: Mystics Rally, But Can't Close

Mayville State opened a quick 0-3 lead, but Bismarck State battled back, tying the set 14 different times -- as late as 19-19. The Comets closed the set on a 6-of-7 run from there, escaping with a 25-20 win.

Set Two: Mystics Can't Hold Off a Mayville Push

BSC built an early 4-0 lead, but Mayville State answered with a 6-1 run of its own to seize control. The set stayed tight into the 20s before the Comets scored five of seven down the stretch to close out a 25-23 win and take a 2-0 match lead.

Set Three: Mystics Stay Alive

Trailing 0-3 early for the second time in the match, Bismarck State battled back behind a strong middle stretch to build a 21-15 lead, closing out a 25-20 win to avoid the sweep.

Set Four: Comets Complete the Upset

Mayville State opened the fourth set with five straight points and never let the Mystics climb back into it, closing out the upset with a 25-15 win.

Mystics Key Performers

• Reese Duchsherer led the way with a team-high 10.0 points on 7 kills, adding 8 digs
• McKenna Brendel added 9 kills for 9.5 points
• Ashlee Stanger and Ellie Baumstarck each contributed to the attack; Stanger finished with 7 kills, while Baumstarck hit .214 with 5 kills and 3 block assists
• Jordyn Rood chipped in 5 kills for 6.5 points
• Piper Harris paced the defense with a team-high 16 digs
• Aislyn Hogan ran the offense for three sets before Aspen Roaldson took over at setter for the finish, combining for 25 assists between them

Game Notes

• Bismarck State hit just .025 as a team, their second-lowest single-game total of the season
• The Mytics fall to 1-6 on the road, but return home still 4-0 in conference play at the Bav
• Mayville State's win snaps a 15-match losing streak and was the Comets' first of the season
