BISMARCK, N.D. – Bismarck State women's basketball welcomed Mayville State (N.D.) to the BSC Armory Friday evening as the Mystics looked to break their four-game conference skid in the midst of their playoff push. A slow start couldn't hold back the Mystics' offense for long as they racked up a season high 94 points in the 94-81 victory.
The Comets attacked BSC early and saw their only lead of the game right off the bat as they jumped ahead and stayed ahead until the 4:30 mark in the first.
Piper Harris and
Kennedy Stormer drilled back-to-back threes to go up 19-11 before MSU closed the quarter hot to trail by just one.
It was as close as they would get to re-capturing the lead as
Harper Harris nailed a three-pointer out of the break and scored eight points in the second period to propel the Mystics to a 44-34 advantage at the half.
BSC saw their best quarter in the third as they shot 8-of-19 from deep to build their biggest lead of the night at 21 points near the end of the frame. They scored 28 in the period, led by
Kali Dauenhauer, who had 12 herself and shot 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
The Comets were able to match the Mystics' third quarter in the final period as they scored 28 of their own, but it was too little, too late as BSC closed the night with 22 points and secured the 94-81 victory.
A balanced attack saw six Mystics score double-figures in their best point-scoring effort of the season, one-upping the 93 points they scored against Rocky Mountain back in November.
Harper Harris led the way with 20 points, a career-best for the freshman, followed by
Natalie DeCoteau with 16.
Kennedy Stormer made an impact all over the stat sheet as she scored 15 and tallied a double-double with 12 rebounds and eight assists.
Kali Dauenhauer scored 12, all coming in the third, and
Piper Harris and
Ashley Martodam each finished with 10 points.
The Mystics improve to 7-12 in Frontier Conference play and now hold a one-game advantage over tomorrow's opponent, Valley City State, for the final playoff spot. BSC is also one game behind Montana Western for the seventh seed.
Bismarck State will gear up to play their final home game of the season, part of the last basketball series played at the BSC Armory before the completion of the Bavendick Center. They will celebrate senior day before facing off against the aforementioned Vikings for, up to this point, their most important game of the season. VCSU (9-14, 6-13) defeated Dickinson State, 78-64, on Friday to move within striking distance of the Mystics. BSC defeated the Vikings, 59-55, back on January 20th.
