BISMARCK, N.D. -- Bismarck State softball returned to Scheels Field in Cottonwood Park on Wednesday for the final time this season as they welcomed 21-22 (11-11) Valley City State (N.D.), who looked to respond after dropping a doubleheader to Mayville State (N.D.) the previous day.
GAME ONE
Valley City State pulled away with a three-run third inning and added three more in the seventh to defeat Bismarck State 6-0.
The decisive stretch came in the top of the third. After Avery Kuklinski scored on an RBI single by Madden Bogenreif, Reagan Mieras followed with a sacrifice fly that brought home two more runs. Both of those runs were unearned after a Bismarck State error, giving Valley City State a 3-0 lead and early control of the game.
The Vikings put the game out of reach in the seventh. Bogenreif delivered another RBI single, Mieras added her second sacrifice fly of the afternoon, and Jenna Decker capped the inning with an RBI single for the final 6-0 margin. Bogenreif finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a triple, while Mieras drove in three runs despite not recording a hit.
Bismarck State managed four hits and drew two walks but could not solve Valley City State starter Maddy Hazelton. Hazelton threw a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits over seven innings while striking out 10 on 102 pitches. The Mystics left five runners on base and were charged with two errors.
Bismarck State's pitching staff kept the game within reach for much of the afternoon, holding Valley City State to three runs through six innings before the late insurance surge. The Vikings finished with nine hits and six RBIs, while Pascale Kihn scored twice as part of the visitors' attack.
GAME TWO
Bismarck State closed its home schedule with an 8-2 victory over Valley City State in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Scheels Field, using Jordyn Marcoux's first-inning grand slam to seize control almost immediately. On an afternoon with temperatures in the low 80s, the Mystics scored five times in the opening inning and never let the lead slip.
The decisive swing came in the bottom of the first. After Bismarck State put runners aboard during a five-run rally, Marcoux drove a bases-loaded home run to give the Mystics a 5-0 advantage. It was the biggest hit of the game and set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. Marcoux finished 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and four RBIs, accounting for half of Bismarck State's runs.
The Mystics added on in the second inning to build a 7-1 lead. Valley City State got on the board when Reagan Mieras scored unearned in the top half of the inning. Bismarck State answered with two more runs in the bottom half, as Savannah Gustavsson came home on a passed ball and Brielle Wrangham later scored to stretch the margin.
Bismarck State did much of its damage despite collecting only four hits, showing patience at the plate with seven walks and making those opportunities count. The Mystics left just three runners on base. Jada Walter supplied the other big blow in the sixth inning, sending a solo home run to center field for an 8-1 lead.
Kya Kulzer started in the circle and earned the victory, going five innings, allowing no earned runs and just four hits. She was relieved by Kaia Hennings, who allowed just one earned and two hits over the final two frames.
The Mystics finished the regular-season home slate with a performance built around one early swing and steady control from there. In the final home game of the season, Marcoux's grand slam provided the lasting image, turning the second game of the doubleheader into a comfortable Bismarck State win.
