NORTH PLATTE, Neb. -- The Bismarck State rodeo team competed in a doubleheader hosted by Mid-Plains Community College Thursday through Saturday. The men's team was reserve champion in Rodeo 1 before claiming the team championship in Rodeo 2 behind the efforts of All-Around Cowboy Cael Hilzendeger. The women's team placed sixth in Rodeo 1 and finished third in Rodeo 2.
In Rodeo 1, the BSC men's team was reserve champion with 565.00 points, trailing host Mid-Plains Community College's champion total of 649.50. The Mystics turned it around in Rodeo 2, piling up 1,190.00 points to claim the team championship over reserve champion Mid-Plains' 405.00, nearly triple the runner-up's total. The BSC women's team finished third in Rodeo 2 with 252.00 points.
"This team showed exactly what we've been building toward," said head coach Jon Peek. "We came out, and we executed during the long weekend, and we're excited to get back home and start prepping for the Mystics Stampede."
Hilzendeger was the story of the weekend, winning the Rodeo 2 men's all-around championship with 340.00 points on the strength of a win in tie-down roping (22.6 seconds) and a third-place tie in steer wrestling (10.9). Elijah Ramos was reserve champion behind him both times (69.0 and 123.0), with Beau Hemmingson placing in both rodeos as well (fourth in Rodeo 1 at 61.0, third in Rodeo 2 at 106.0) -- BSC swept the top three spots in bareback riding across the weekend.
Kale Hansen and Tucker Turbiville each finished inside the top five of the Rodeo 2 men's all-around (fourth and reserve champion, respectively). Hansen was champion in Rodeo 2 steer wrestling (8.8) after placing in the event in Rodeo 1 as well, while Turbiville was reserve champion in both Rodeo 2 tie-down roping (23.0) and steer wrestling (10.6).
On the women's side, Addison Salverson was BSC's top performer, placing in barrel racing, goat tying and the Rodeo 2 women's all-around standings (reserve champion, 130.00 points).
The Mystics now sit atop the NIRA Great Plains Region men's standings with 2,505.00 points after three rodeos, well ahead of reserve champion Mid-Plains (1,714.50).
