BISMARCK, N.D. – United Tribes Technical College chased Bismarck State College all night Thursday in a Mon-Dak Conference men's basketball game and finally caught the Mystics at the end.
After tying the game 86-86 with 2:43 to play, they Thunderbirds eased ahead and held on for a 93-91 win on their home court despite 31 points and eight rebounds and seven assists from Deonte Martinez. The sophomore guard made 14 of 18 shots from the field, including two 3-pointers. Tobias Patton and Garrett Bader added 16 points apiece.
The Mystics (4-8 Mon-Dak, 6-12 overall) outshot the Thunderbirds 57 percent to 46 percent, but they could not handle getting outrebounded 19-9 on the offensive end. United Tribes outscored the Mystics 23-8 in second-chance points.
With Mon-Dak scoring leader Famous Lefthand (24.7 points per game) making only 2 of 14 shots and finishing with seven points, the Thunderbirds (8-4 Mon-Dak, 14-6 overall) needed an offensive pick-me-up and got it from five players, who hit double figures. DK Middleton had 21 points before fouling out. Cayden Redfield had 15 points and Jayden Yankton and Sylvester Union had 14 points each. Tristin Davis added 11.
Jesse White's driving layup with 30 seconds left gave United Tribes a 93-89 lead but Jaden Hamilton cut it to 93-91. Union missed two free throws with 25 seconds left and BSC had a chance to tie it, but Anthony Bertucci's fall-away 3-pointer as time was running out drew iron.
BSC is home against Miles Community College on Jan. 30 and Dawson Community College on Feb. 2.
