WAHPETON, N.D. – Throw out the second quarter and the Bismarck State College qomen's basketball might have escaped North Dakota State College of Science with a win on Thursday. Instead, the Mon-Dak Conference-leading Wildcats used a 29-10 advantage as the launching pad for a 74-62 victory over the Mystics.
The Mystics (11-7 Mon-Dak, 14-10 overall) led 14-8 after one quarter, but the Wildcats (16-2 Mon-Dak, 23-4 overall) raced away in the second quarter and also outscored BSC 23-18 in the third to build an insurmountable lead. They were helped by a 53-40 edge in rebounding, including 21 offensive boards that led to 23 second-chance points.
Sydney Gustvasson turned in another excellent all-around game for the Mystics with 25 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. The effort moved Gustavsson into a tie with Dakota College at Bottineau's Jacie Hall for the conference scoring lead. Each averages 20.2 points.
Gustavsson and Ashton Kinnebrew played all 40 minutes for BSC. Kinnebrew added 10 points and six rebounds. They were the only BSC players in double figures.
Grace Massaquoi paced the Wildcats with 17 points.
The Mystics' next game is Monday at Miles Coummunity College.
