TUSCON, Ariz. – Bismarck State College freshmen are making a whole lot of noise early in the 2023 baseball season.
On Monday, Kayden Camacho tossed a three-hit complete game as the Mystics beat Abbotsford Cardinals 7-1 in the first game of a doubleheader and three freshmen hurlers combined with sophomore Darion Alexander to beat Abbotsford 19-2 in the second game.
The Mystics are 4-0 on their Arizona swing and have outscored their opponents 54-10. BSC plays Concordia (Wis.) University JV on Tuesday
In Monday's opener, Jordan Tucker and Riley Pierce banged out two hits apiece and Tucker homered and scored three times against the Cardinals. Camacho struck out 10 and walked two in seven innings of work.
BSC pounded out 15 hits in the second game, led by Will Bachman and Aaron Breitbach with three hits each. Both had a double and a triple and scored twice. Brennan Phillips scored four runs and drove in three and Wyatt Tweet had three hits and drove in three runs. Scott Seim got the win in relief, not that starter Carson Zimmel needed relief. Four hurlers each worked between 1 and 1.2 innings in a game stopped after five innings.
Tweet is having a particularly strong start at the plate. In his first day as a Mystic on Sunday, Tweet went 5-for-7 with two homers, a triple, four runs scored and 10 runs batted in in two wins. After Monday's games, he is 8-for-16 with two doubles, a triple, two homers, 13 runs batted in and six runs scored.
On Sunday, Tweet had a grand slam and drove in four runs in a 16-5 win over Central Lakes College in the season opener. He then homered again and drove in six runs in a 12-2 late-night win over Southern California Leadership University.
Against SCLU, second baseman Pierce doubled and scored three runs, Zimmel, playing shortstop, had two hits. Left-fielder Tucker had two hits and scored twice. Freshman pitcher Bryce Libke went six innings, allowing two hits, striking out six and walking two to get the win.
