BISMARCK, N.D. — After dropping the opener 12-4, the Bismarck State College Mystics stormed back with an offensive outburst in the nightcap, defeating the Dickinson State Blue Hawks 14-8 to earn a doubleheader split on Friday at Haaland Field.
The Mystics combined for 22 hits and 18 RBIs across the two games, bouncing back from early struggles to showcase a balanced, high-powered lineup that erupted in nearly every inning of game two.
Game One: Dickinson State 12, Bismarck State 4
The Blue Hawks struck early and often in the opener, jumping out to an 8-0 lead by the third inning and never letting go. Dickinson finished with 14 hits, including three home runs, to hand the Mystics their second loss of the season.
BSC starter Eli Thompson (0-1) faced a relentless DSU order that capitalized on early free passes and power hitting. Jadyn Roberts led the charge for Dickinson, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including a two-run homer in the second and a two-RBI single in the third. Wyatt Wilharm added a solo shot in the second, and Logan Braaten launched a home run in the fourth that helped build the early cushion.
The Mystics broke through in the fifth when Pacey Phillips ripped a two-run double, scoring Pablo Guzman and Karsen Haney. Kaeden Wilcox followed with an RBI double to plate Phillips, trimming the deficit to 12-3. Brayden Bunnell added an RBI single in the seventh, but the comeback bid fell short as BSC stranded six runners on base.
Thompson, Kayden Camacho, and Parker Henrich combined for seven innings on the mound, allowing 14 hits and three home runs. Henrich provided the steadiest relief, working four innings with two strikeouts and no walks.
Game Two: Bismarck State 14, Dickinson State 8
The Mystics wasted no time flipping the script in the second game of the afternoon.
After the Blue Hawks jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first, BSC responded with fireworks of its own. Kaeden Wilcox doubled, and Brayden Bunnell launched a two-run homer to even the score. Moments later, Cole Shirley singled, and Caleb Gimbel crushed a two-run shot to give the Mystics a 4-2 lead after one.
BSC kept rolling in the second when Tate Mart delivered a solo home run and Bunnell drove in another run with a single. By the end of the second inning, the Mystics led 6-2 and were firmly in command.
Wilcox and Shirley tacked on RBIs in the fourth, stretching the advantage to 8-2 before Dickinson mounted a furious comeback in the fifth. The Blue Hawks plated six runs—highlighted by a two-run homer from Ty Farwell and an RBI single from Kadin Finders—to tie the game at 8-8.
Rather than fold, the Mystics answered with their biggest inning of the season.
In the bottom of the sixth, Phillips reached base to start the rally, and the BSC bats caught fire. Bunnell's RBI single drove in Mart, followed by Shirley's RBI single that brought home Phillips. Haney then doubled to score two more, and chaos on the base paths forced a series of wild pitches that allowed two additional runs to score. When the dust settled, BSC had hung a six-spot to reclaim control, 14-8.
Reliever Riley Walters (1-0) slammed the door in the final innings, striking out four and allowing just one hit over 2.1 scoreless frames to earn the win.
Bunnell led the Mystics with a 3-for-4 performance, including four RBIs and his first home run of the season. Shirley went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Gimbel added two RBIs on his second homer of the season, and Haney finished with a two-RBI double. Mart homered and scored twice.
