Strong start not enough as BSC falls to Jimmies

Stormer scores 20 and P. Harris dishes six assists as Mystics defeated by Division-II foe.

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The Mystics women's basketball team was back in action on Tuesday evening, a week removed from their most recent exhibition and two weeks removed from their season opener. They were at Harold Newman Arena to take on the Jamestown (N.D.) Jimmies, who are in their inaugural season at the NCAA Division-II level.

BSC had the hot hand from beyond the arc to start the game, as they shot 5-for-11 (45.5%) from distance in the first quarter to keep the Jimmies' lead to just three points at 20-17.

Both teams maintained their consistent shooting in the second quarter as they each knocked down four three-pointers. The difference in the game would come from inside the painted line, as the Mystics entered halftime having scored 27 of their 35 points from three, with the other eight coming from two field goals and four free throws.

Jamestown's balanced attack saw 25 of their 43 points come from inside the arc in the first half. That would make all the difference in the second half as the Jimmies emerged from the break and capitalized on every opportunity as they tallied 13 fast-break points and 16 points in the paint in the third quarter alone.

The three-point shooting turned cold for the Mystics as they went just 3-for-20 in the second half as the Jimmies ran their way to a 91-69 victory.

Kennedy Stormer was the leading scorer for BSC for the second consecutive game, as she had 20 points and seven rebounds and was effective at creating turnovers as she had five steals. Her sister, Piper Harris, led the way in the assist column with six. Fellow dual-sport athlete, Ashley Martodam, tallied nine points in her first game of the season.

The Mystics fall to 0-2 on the young season, and the Jimmies improve to 2-0.

BSC won't have much time to reflect on the loss, as they're back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 5:30 p.m., just 24 hours removed from the game in Jamestown. They travel north on Highway 83 to take on the Minot State Beavers (1-4, 0-0).

They'll return home following Wednesday's game for their home opener and first Frontier Conference games against Rocky Mountain (Mont.) and Carroll (Mont.). Those doubleheaders will start with the women's game at 5 p.m. followed by the men's game at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21-22.
