Mystic Women fall to No. 9 Dakota Wesleyan in first NAIA action

MITCHELL, S.D. – Tuesday marked a new beginning for BSC Mystic Women's Basketball team as they played their first official NAIA game since the college made the jump this fall. And their first opponent was no small challenge, as they faced No. 9-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), a team fresh off a 25-7 season which included a trip to the NAIA National Tournament.

Defense was the name of the game through the first quarter as the Mystics held the Tigers to 11 points, but could only muster four of their own. Both teams were a combined 4-28 from the field through the first 10 minutes.

The Tigers began building on their slim advantage and exploded over the next three quarters to score 23, 24 and 23 to build on a lead that would not be relinquished and defeat the Mystics by a final of 81-43.

The Mystics were led in scoring by newcomer and Minot State transfer, Kennedy Stormer, who finished the game with 17 points, 10 of which came in the third quarter, where she was three of four from beyond the arc. Natalie DeCoteau was right behind her with 11 points and also posted a team-high in rebounds with seven. Jayden Wiest was third in scoring with eight points and also led the team with three assists and two steals. 

Points in the paint proved to be a defining statistic as the Tigers dominated on both ends, scoring 52 points and only allowing 10. The Mystics were forced to find their offense from outside the three-point line, where they had the advantage, but couldn't match the volume, as they went 7-34 (20.6%) compared to DWU's 3-16 (18.8%).

The Mystics return home and will have a week to prepare for their next contest as they host former in-conference rival, United Tribes Technical College (2-1). That game will be on Veteran's Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7:45 p.m. from the BSC Armory.
