MAYVILLE, N.D. – Bismarck State came out swinging in the opening set but couldn't sustain momentum, falling 3-1 to Mayville State on Friday night. Set scores were 25-12, 19-25, 20-25, 16-25.
The Mystics (2-11, 0-9) controlled the first set behind efficient hitting and steady defense, but the Comets (5-9, 3-6) regrouped to take the next three frames.
Reese Duchsherer paced BSC's attack with 16 kills and 16 digs, while
Chelsa Krom was a force at the net with 11 kills on a team-best .625 hitting percentage to go along with five total blocks.
Dedra Wood added five kills without an error, and
Ashley Martodam chipped in five kills and a pair of block assists.
Setter
Kate Zimmer kept the offense moving with 27 assists, while libero
Piper Harris anchored the back row with a match-high 25 digs.
Brooklyn Sand contributed 18 digs of her own, giving the Mystics three players in double figures defensively.
After hitting .333 in the first set, BSC couldn't maintain consistency, finishing the match at .101 overall. The Comets steadily improved as the night went on, hitting .286 in the decisive fourth set.
Bismarck State returns to action early next week on Tuesday, Sept. 30, as they hit the road for a non-conference matchup against Division-II Minot State. First serve in Minot is set for 6 p.m. CT, and game coverage links can be found below:
