MINOT, N.D. — Bismarck State came out with a purpose as they pushed NCAA Division-II foe Minot State to five sets but came up short in a 3-2 (25-17, 20-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-9) loss Tuesday evening at the MSU Dome.
The Mystics (2-12, 0-9 Frontier) showed resilience after dropping the first set, responding with a 25-20 win in the second. BSC forced a decisive fifth frame with a 25-19 victory in the fourth before the Beavers (2-12, 0-5 NSIC) closed out the match behind a .333 hitting percentage in the final set.
Reese Duchsherer powered the Mystics with a match-high 20 kills (including a remarkable 21.0 points) while adding 15 digs. Ashley Martodam reached double figures with 11 kills, and Emerson Carufel chipped in seven. Chelsa Krom provided balance at the net with six kills and three blocks.
On defense, Piper Harris collected a team-high 27 digs, while setters Kate Zimmer and Delaney Deschamp combined for 40 assists. BSC finished with 12 team blocks, led by Krom, Martodam, and Dedra Wood.
The Mystics saw familiar faces on the other side of the net as the Beavers were led by not one, not two, but three former Mystics. Caton Pearcy led Minot State in points with 16.0 as she had a match-high four service aces and added 11 kills while leading the Beavers with 19 digs. Just behind her in digs was former NJCAA All-American Maya Vibeto with 13 and Zoe Zarr with 14.
Bismarck State returns as they get ready to celebrate homecoming weekend, when they welcome (RV) Carroll College (11-6, 6-3) for Friday's 6 p.m. game, and Rocky Mountain (0-13, 0-9) for Saturday's 3 p.m. contest.
