BISMARCK, N.D. — Bismarck State College forced extra points and captured a marathon second set but fell to No. 24 Dakota State (S.D.) in four, 25-16, 32-34, 25-18, 25-12, on Saturday afternoon at the BSC Armory.
The Mystics (2-5) seized momentum in the second, trading points through 22 ties and eight lead changes before closing it out 34-32, energizing a home Mystic crowd. Dakota State (5-2) answered by hitting .353 for the match and controlling the final two frames.
Reese Duchsherer led the Mystics with 13 kills and five digs, while
Chelsa Krom added 10 kills and hit .318.
McKenna Brendel tallied five kills, and
Paige McAllister chipped in four.
Emerson Carufel finished with four kills, while setter
Kate Zimmer distributed 23 assists and delivered two service aces. Defensively, libero
Piper Harris anchored the back row with a match-high 22 digs.
Despite the loss, BSC showed resilience in the extended second set, battling point-for-point against a strong Trojan attack. Dakota State finished with a .353 hitting percentage, led by Halle Bruflat's 17 kills and Macey Wathen's 13 kills.
The Mystics hit the road next week as they gear up to travel to Butte and Dillon, Mont. as they take on No. 21 Montana Tech and (RV) Montana Western. The next action at the BSC Armory is Sept. 19 and 20 as the Mystics welcome No. 5 Providence (Mont.) and Montana State University-Nothern.
