GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Bismarck State Track & Field closed a memorable week at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships with a string of record-setting performances, four All-America finishes and strong national team placements that underscored just how much the Mystics accomplished in their first year competing in the NAIA. The men finished tied for 21st nationally with 11 points, powered by Cayden Kraft, the distance medley relay and the 4x400-meter relay, while the women tied for 43rd with five points behind Priviledge Bower's fourth-place finish.
Saturday's finals delivered the biggest moments. Kraft became BSC's first NAIA All-American when he placed seventh in the 400-meter dash in 47.29, bettering the school record and personal best he had set a day earlier in qualifying at 47.67. Bower followed with another landmark performance in the 60, taking fourth in 7.45 after qualifying with the fourth-fastest prelim time of 7.49, also a personal record and school mark. Earlier in the meet, Bower also placed 16th in the 200 and lowered the school record there as well, giving the Mystics a major boost on both the men's and women's sides.
The relays added even more momentum. The men's distance medley relay, made up entirely of freshmen in Connor Ensign, Daniel Oduse, Xavier Bell and Jakson Ensign, also continued its rise. After qualifying in 10:02.16, the group ran 10:02.14 in the final to place sixth and become BSC's first relay All-Americans. The men's 4x400 team of Nathan Mathern, Keaton Saastad, Timol Walters and Kraft qualified for the final with a school-record 3:13.72, then came back to win its heat in the final and place third overall in another school record, 3:13.00. That finish made the quartet the Mystics' final group of indoor All-Americans and provided one of the clearest highlights of the weekend in what was the final track event at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center.Â
The individual depth showed throughout the meet. Connor Ensign advanced to the mile final after running 4:15.69 in prelims, a school record at the time, then lowered it again with a 4:14.84 effort to finish ninth overall after entering the meet seeded 15th. Jakson Ensign also delivered a breakthrough race in the mile, placing 11th in 4:16.24, a personal best that put him just behind his teammate and added to a strong distance showing. In the 400 prelims, Mathern posted a personal-best 48.01 to finish 10th from the No. 14 seed, while Tsitsi Karanda placed 15th in the 600 with a school-record 1:35.22.
Even the moments that did not end in points reflected the program's progress. The women's 4x400 relay opened the meet by clocking 3:55.06, a new school record, before a disqualification after review. Kennedy Harter tied for 21st in the triple jump, narrowly missing the mark to record a score. Taken together, the performances in Gainesville showed a program competing with confidence on a national stage, collecting personal records, school records and All-America honors across sprints, distance events and relays.
That form carried into the broader season picture for Bismarck State College, the indoor national meet offered a fitting snapshot of the season as a whole, rising talent, freshmen making immediate impact and a team that kept turning breakthrough performances into school history.
Next up for the team, the outdoor track season begins in exactly two weeks back on campus as the team competes in the Marauders Outdoor Opener hosted by UMary (N.D.). They'll have their sights set on repeating their success in Gainesville as they look towards the NAIA Outdoor Track & Fields Championships on May 20-22 in Asheville, N.C., looking to hit their qualifying marks once again in the two-and-a-half month outdoor season.
